Hi everyone – here’s my Mid-Month Update for December 2019. This year went by fast and I’m already gearing up for a busy 2020. The Town has much to accomplish in the new year. Here are just a few of my top priority goals:
In response to residents’ complaints about poor cell phone reception in Superior, the Town reached out to all the major cell phone carriers to see if they would take steps to improve service. We met with Verizon in January, February, and March to discuss deploying “small cell” technology throughout Superior and identified numerous problem areas/dead zones. I wrote previously about our progress with Verizon in my April 2019 and July 2019 Mid-Month Updates. In addition to deploying small cells, Verizon has now proposed constructing a large “macro” facility in Community Park. This macro facility and several planned small cells will be considered by the Planning Commission and Town Board in January 2020. One of my 2020 goals is that this effort will greatly improve cell phone service from Verizon in Superior and that other carriers will follow Verizon’s lead in the near future.
On Monday, December 16, 2019, the Town Board will hear a concept presentation from OZ Architecture about possible designs and upgrades for 1500 Coalton Road. OZ Architecture’s presentation is available here (the image included above is an image from OZ’s presentation). I wrote previously about this property and my thoughts about potential uses for this space in my November 2019 Mid-Month Update. I look forward to getting feedback from residents, deciding on a final design, and delivering an amazing community amenity — a place where all of our residents (including youth and seniors) can gather to learn, work, play, socialize, and more.
In 2020, I want the Town to prioritize open space acquisitions to preserve the few parcels of undeveloped land that we have left here in Superior. I will continue to encourage the Town to work in conjunction with conservation groups to leverage all resources available to the Town, including our Open Space Fund (which is funded by the Open Space Sales Tax authorized by the voters in 2003), Open Space bonds (approved by the voters in 2006), and partnerships with other local governments.
2020 is slated to be a busy year for Downtown Superior. Now that the Morgan Ranch FDP has been approved, a goal that I think we all share is to see the commercial core of Main Street break ground and start taking shape. I will continue to push the developer for the proposal for constructing a bridge on Marshall Road (over Coal Creek), which will allow Parks 1 & 2 to be constructed as well. It will be great to finally see shops, restaurants, parks, and community space be built.
It’s hard to believe that I’ve already served three years (of my four-year term) on the Town Board. In November 2020, three Trustee seats will be up for election — including my own. I will be making a decision later in 2020 on whether I will seek another term and run for re-election. It’s been a privilege to serve our community for the past three years and I look forward to continuing to do so in 2020.
We have a lot to be proud of and to look forward to in the future. I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season and will see you in the new year!
