Hi everyone – Happy New Year! Here’s my Mid-Month Update for January 2020. We’re gearing up for a busy 2020!
I wrote about Verizon’s plans to install a Macro Tower Facility in my December 2019 Mid-Month Update. Since then, at its January 7, 2020 meeting, the Planning Commission considered and recommended approval of Verizon’s tower installation in Community Park. The Town Board is scheduled to consider this application on January 27, 2020. Check out the before and after coverage projections from Verizon. Currently, cell phone coverage for Verizon customers is “marginal” in many areas in Superior. With the installation of the new Macro Facility, coverage should be “good” or “great” in most of Superior — a significant improvement.
Do you have a teenager who is looking for a summer job? The Superior Youth Leadership Council (SYLC) and the Superior Chamber of Commerce will be partnering to host a Youth Job Fair later this Spring. Stay tuned for details of this exciting, new event for teens.
New Superior Monument signs are being installed in various locations around town. These signs identify that you’ve arrived in Superior, and aesthetically, I hope they create a sense of belonging and community, a sense of being home — one more thing for us to take pride in about our town.
If you look around town today, there are few signs that identify our town. To address this need, the Town Board approved the design for these monument signs at its June 10, 2019 meeting and a link to the presentation with the look and locations of the additional signs is available here.
On January 13, the Town Board will consider a pilot program to have goats graze in open space areas to avoid the use of herbicides and the need for mowing to control noxious weeds and other pests. The proposal would have goats used in the open space located north of Castle Park towards Mount Sopris Way (Map is attached indicating location). The area is approximately 7 acres and it is estimated that it will take 42 days for the goats to work through the entire property in small portable corrals. Portable electric fencing will be used to make the corrals and the group will be protected by their guard llama Vinny — who will keep the goats safe from coyotes.
I wrote about preliminary architectural designs for 1500 Coalton (the former Land Rover building) from OZ Architecture in my December Mid-Month Update.
Two Community Engagement sessions are scheduled on Thursday, January 16th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 19th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. These meetings will occur at the 1500 Coalton Road building and will give residents an opportunity to interact with facilitators and architects regarding the new designs and provide input on how they would like to use the community spaces. If you are not able to attend one of these in-person meetings, online community engagement will also be available in mid-January. Look for details soon.
2020 will be another busy year for the Town Board with several, important development applications on the horizon. Notable projects include: (1) a multi-family residential project on the Zaharias project; (2) 24 single family residential units on Blocks 26/27 in Downtown Superior; (3) 58 single family residential “wee-cottages” on Rogers Farm; and (4) a bridge over Coal Creek connecting Marshall Road to Downtown Superior.
The Town’s website provides additional information about these projects available here.
