Hi everyone – I hope you are all feeling well, staying safe, and doing your part to stop the spread of COVID-19 by staying home. Here’s my mid-month update for April 2020 for things going on in and around Superior.
The Town of Superior has developed a Small Business Emergency Relief Grant program to help Superior business owners affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This program will provide grants of $5,000 or $10,000 to help offset some of the economic impacts caused by the pandemic. The Town is accepting applications from small businesses and restaurants with a brick-and-mortar presence in the community (not including home-based businesses). If interested in applying, please complete this application. Funds will be distributed until available funding is depleted. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee that a grant will be awarded.
In addition to efforts of the Town, the Superior Chamber of Commerce has really stepped up to the plate to help our local, small businesses. The Chamber started Operation Carryout – a list of Superior restaurants (and places outside of Superior who are members) that are open for carry-out orders. More info can be found here.
The Chamber also launched a program called Hungry Hungry Heroes where you can donate money to be used to place food orders at local Superior Chamber restaurants for medical personnel that are working at Avista Adventist, Good Samaritan, and Boulder County Hospital. More info can be found here.
Finally, in addition to keeping everyone well fed, the Chamber has also compiled a list of resources for small businesses who are struggling because of COVID-19. Check out their page here.
All outdoor park/recreational equipment (playgrounds, exercise equipment, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, bike and skate parks, picnic tables/shelters) have been temporarily closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19. We appreciate all residents respecting these closures. Also, please make sure to follow the social distancing guidelines when using our trails and open space areas.
This year, the biggest capital improvement project for Superior will be the reconstruction/repaving of 88th Street. Work has already started: grading and earthwork along the east side of the roadway and installation of potable water, reuse water, sewer and stormwater lines. After this initial work is completed, 88th Street will be undergoing a complete reconstruction with the addition of dedicated bike lanes and sidewalks, as well as space to extend to 4 lanes in the future if necessary. Plans for 88th Street are available here.
We are working to coordinate as much of the construction to occur while school is out for the summer, so that we do not interfere with students traveling to and from Monarch. The plan is to close 88th Street for 2 months this summer in order to expedite the construction. During this project, emergency vehicles will still be able to use 88th to access Avista hospital. Also if BVSD does not return to in-school learning, we will be trying to expedite the project to take advantage of the Stay at Home Order that is currently in place.
Just a quick update, as I’ve previously written about, the Town Board approved Verizon’s application to install a macro antenna in Community in January 2020. Verizon is lining up their contractor now and work should start this month. If all goes to plan Superior residents will soon have better and more reliable Verizon cell phone reception throughout Town.
UPDATE: Due to COVID-19, Verizon will not be starting construction on the macro facility until later this summer.
If there is one thing that unites all Superior residents, it’s our general dislike for the fence color that is used throughout our community. This color is actually known as “Kwal 0167 Dune Gray.” The challenge is that the color is codified into the Rock Creek HOA’s covenants, which makes it extremely difficult for the HOA to change, without a ⅔ vote of the entire Rock Creek HOA membership.
That said, help is on the way. The Town is not limited by the Rock Creek HOA covenant and has the ability to change the color of the fences that the Town maintains (along open space areas.) The Town is working directly with the Rock Creek HOA Board to select a better color to transition to, as a first step in the process of moving away from the unsightly “Kwal 0167 Dune Gray.”
