A temporary use permit has been issued for Curative Labs to place a COVID-19 testing trailer immediately northwest of the roundabout at Marshall Road and 5th Avenue within the Superior Marketplace. More details will be coming out soon from the Town.
Boulder County Public Health is no longer giving us total cases for Superior. Instead, they are giving us regional data. You can see the case trend in the regional chart (Superior, Louisville, and Lafayette) below:
Boulder County updated its mask order on May 20, 2021. Indoor masking continues through June 10 (School, Childcare, Healthcare settings, Public Transportation). Private businesses are free to adopt their own mask rules. Masks are not required outdoors unless you can’t safely maintain distances.

Great news! Superior will hold its annual parade and Superior Downhill Mile on July 4th this summer. The Town is also planning an event at Community Park along with a grand opening of our new Community Center at 1500 Coalton across the street! Stay tuned for more details — you won’t want to miss the 4th of July in Superior this year.
The community center webpage is up and running with pictures and details on operating hours, room rentals, and program proposals. Room rental requests and program proposals are beginning to fill the calendar, which is exciting to see! Anticipated July and August programming includes yoga, photography, writing, painting, bicycle maintenance, story time, naturalist programs, and a variety of early childhood and after-school programs. Anyone who wants to teach or lead a program can go on-line and fill out the program proposal form or contact PROS staff at 303-499-3675, ext. 119. Opening of the community center is currently scheduled on July 4th following the parade. Food, beverage, music, and information on community center activities will be available.
As I previously wrote about back in December 2020, the Town switched landscaping companies to Brightview. I am very interested in your feedback regarding the new contractor — please email the town board (townboard@superiorcolorado.gov) so we can evaluate our landscape contractor’s performance this first year.
A few notes about the landscaping this year. Brightview is proposing xeriscaping for the median areas along Rock Creek in an effort to reduce machinery maintenance, pesticides, and watering needs. These plans are being reviewed by ACES (Advisory Committee for Environmental Sustainability.) Also, flower growers in Colorado are experiencing a shortage of plant products this year due to COVID-19. As a result, the Town’s flower supply has been disrupted and plantings may have some delay and some different varieties of plants may be used this year.
The Town paints and maintains outside-facing fence sections throughout the Rock Creek subdivision that abut the Town’s right-of-way or open space/greenbelt areas. We’re on a four-year, rotating schedule where we’ll repaint all of the Town-maintained fence sections. We just painted Section 1 last year. This summer, we’ll paint Section 2 (North of Coalton, South of Rock Creek Parkway). The Town will continue to paint the sections it maintains the official Cabot Dune Gray specified in the Rock Creek HOA.
The RMMA Roundtable held its monthly meeting on May 10, 2021 where we were joined by flight schools that operate out of RMMA: ATP Flight School, McAir Aviation, Rocky Mountain Flight School, and Western Air Flight Academy. To hear the full Q&A session, please visit this link which will take you to the recordings for all of the RMMA Noise Roundtable meetings. Roundtable meetings are held the second Monday of each month. Public comment is available at the beginning of each meeting if you’d like to make your voice heard.
In addition, RMMA is developing a Strategic Business Plan to guide investment and development decisions during the next 20 years. As the region grows, so does interest in development at RMMA. Airport stakeholder engagement is an important part of this process. This survey is one step in receiving public comment during development of the Strategic Plan. A link to the survey is available here.
Let’s end the rumor that Superior won’t have holiday lights this year. The Town continues to budget and contract for holiday lights installations throughout our Town each year. Recently, however, the Rock Creek HOA elected to end an annual $25,000 contribution to the Town to help subsidize our annual holiday lights displays. Going forward, we’ll have to determine in our budget how and if the Town should make up the prior contribution from elsewhere in our budget, or alternatively, if we’re willing to live with a less expensive holiday display. Either way, Holiday Lights will continue. If Holiday Lights are important to you, please let the Board know!
The goats just arrived yesterday, May 21st! Vinny the guard llama had a prior commitment. We were supposed to get Elvis this year, however after talking with the “goat master” last night, they decided not to bring Elvis as he was described as a “mean guard who might scare the children.” The goats can be found in the open space off Indiana, across from Eldorado PK-8. I wrote about this last month.
The new tower was successfully installed on Wednesday this past week. Verizon will continue working on their equipment installation and testing for about another month at which time the cell tower should be functional.
Where are the wildflowers at Wildflower Park? 200 wildflower plants were recently planted at Wildflower Park and an additional number of plants will be added throughout the summer to bolster the wildflower crop.
Did you know that you are paying for membership to the Louisville Library? In 2010, Superior voters approved a tax levy of 1.5 mills to pay for the Louisville library services. Here are two valuable resources I regularly use because of this membership:
Free New York Times Access: If you enjoy reading the New York Times consider free access through the Louisville Library. All you have to do is click here. Free audiobooks through Libby.
Sweet on Superior began in early May. The program features six-weeks of creative multimedia challenges promoting the Superior businesses you love & encouraging you to explore the ones you may not yet know about, yet. Download the Goose Chase app, find the game “Sweet on Superior” & use password sweetonsuperior to join the fun and win prizes! For contest details visit here.
Local community groups on Facebook like “Superior Community” or the “OhOh27” are great places to connect with neighbors and community members about local issues. However, I do not monitor these groups or all their posts. While I do my best to participate and stay informed about what’s going on in our local Facebook groups, the best way to reach me is by sending a direct email to me at markl@superiorcolorado.gov. If you want to reach the entire Town Board, email us at townboard@superiorcolorado.gov.
On the First Friday of every month, starting at 7:45 a.m., Town Board members host “First Fridays” which is an opportunity to drop in for a casual conversation with your elected officials to ask questions/get updates on things going on around town. To participate in this month’s First Friday on June 4th, visit this link for more information.
If you’d prefer to meet with me one-on-one, please shoot me an email at markl@superiorcolorado.gov and we’ll find time to schedule a Lowdown with Trustee Lacis.
