Hi everyone — Here’s my update for July 2021. Read on for updates about our new community center, vandalism of public art, a new ordinance allowing food trucks to operate in Superior, AquaClimb at the South Pool, July 4th events, the new Verizon tower, re-paving of McCaslin Blvd., Purple Park playground improvements, and more…
Shout out to Superior’s Parks & Rec department for coming up with a great idea and installing the new AquaClimb climbing wall at the South Pool. It’s a great addition to an already great pool. The kids really love it and even the adults (i.e., me) have been seen trying it out during adult swim. I encourage everyone to give it a try… it’s not just for kids.
Around Memorial Day weekend, nine prairie dog sculptures were vandalized and one was stolen and later recovered off of Flagstaff Mountain. Two murals under Rock Creek Parkway were also vandalized. To discourage further vandalism, all of the prairie dogs have been removed. You will find them safe and sound at our new Community Center. It’s disappointing and disheartening for those who put so much time and effort into these projects. Our Cultural Arts & Public Spaces committee is working so hard to infuse public art into Superior. If you appreciate their efforts like I do, take a moment and send them an email (CAPS@superiorcolorado.gov) to show your support.
Our new Community Center at 1500 Coalton Road is now open! For details on operating hours, room rentals, and programs, please visit this website.
Programming in July and August will feature nature events, enrichment activities from Museo De Las Americas (arts & crafts), and fitness programs such as Yoga Junction and Jump Bunch. Future programming will include photography classes, bike maintenance workshops, and more. You can register for these programs by visiting https://www.superiorcolorado.gov/departments/parks-recreation-open-space/recreation-programs and clicking on “Enrichment” and/or “Sports and Fitness.”
Library services are also available at the Community Center, where you’ll be able to request materials from the Louisville Library for pickup & dropoff right here in Superior. “The Spot” (our dedicated teen space room) already has foosball and ping pong tables, and cornhole is on the way. The Community Center’s caterer — Serenity Catering — is working on a liquor license and designing a daily menu. Meeting rooms are also available to rent and reservations are already coming in! Please keep in mind that we are still waiting on some furniture to be delivered, so it might feel a little empty right now. Thanks again to our CAPS Committee for making the Community Center exceptionally beautiful inside with murals, a moss wall, art from our bus stops, prairie dogs, and “History in the Making: Snapshots of Superior 2020.” The Community Center will continue to grow and evolve to fit our community’s needs.
This summer we’ll be repaving McCaslin Blvd. between Hwy 128 and the Coalton Roundabout. Fortunately, the road’s subsurface is in good enough condition so we won’t need to reconstruct the entire road — instead, we’ll just do a “mill and overlay” which is faster and more economical to perform. Construction will most likely start in mid-July and will involve periodic disruptions to the regular traffic flow of McCaslin to the south. Stay tuned for updates from the Town and thank you for your patience through this construction project.
Our PARC (Parks and Recreation) Committee has been hard at work preparing for renovations to the playground equipment at Purple Park. Purple Park was one of the first things built in Rock Creek in the mid-1990s and was designed to attract people to buy homes in Rock Creek Ranch. Much of the playground equipment is original to the mid-1990s and past its useful life.
Here are some of the renderings that the PARC Committee is currently reviewing. Thank you to our PARC committee volunteers for all their hard work and dedication to keeping our parks beautiful. Our parks are one of the biggest reasons my family moved here. If you’re interested in being a part of the conversations please join a PARC meeting which are held the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm.
UPDATE: The PARC committee is having a Special Meeting on Wednesday, June 30 at 7:00pm to discuss the Purple Park playground proposals. More information can be found here.
This spring, the Town Board amended the Municipal Code to allow food trucks to operate in Superior. Under the new ordinance, food trucks will need a Business License and a Permit from the Town, but will not be allowed to operate within 50 feet of any existing brick-and-mortar restaurant, unless the restaurant consents in writing. I appreciate the community’s suggestions to change our Code and I’m excited for more food truck parties this summer! Send me an invite – I’d love to be there.
Superior will hold its Annual Parade and Downhill Mile on July 4th. Congressman Joe Neguse, State Senator Tammy Story, and State. Rep. Matt Gray will all be in the parade. In addition, the Town will host a food truck event at Community Park (with a live band and vendor booths) along with the grand opening of our new Community Center at 1500 Coalton Road (live music, food, dance performances, etc.) Please visit this link for details on how to register for the Superior Downhill Mile (deadline is June 30th), how to register to participate in the parade, how to volunteer, how to sign up for a vendor booth, and more… I will see you there!
As I previously wrote about back in December 2020, the Town switched landscaping companies this year from Vargas to Brightview. Brightview was less expensive than Vargas and also promised to transition over the course of 4 years to an all-electric fleet which would reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, this change in companies has resulted in a decreased level of service and the look & feel of our Town has suffered. In my opinion, Brightview’s work is not up to our Superior standards. It was a mistake to approve this change and I am actively working to make things right for our community.
Construction on the new Verizon wireless tower has been completed in Community Park. It will take several weeks for Verizon to complete testing, implementation, and receive clearance from the regulatory authorities before the new cell site will be available. Thanks for your patience.
Want to talk 1:1 about Town issues? Love Superior? Hate Superior? Tell me about it. Shoot me an email at markl@superiorcolorado.gov and we’ll find time to schedule a Lowdown with Trustee Lacis. I’ve met people at Panera and Starbucks recently and would really like to have some 1:1s at our new Community Center. If you prefer a less personal talk, come to First Fridays on July 2nd. Each month, Town Board members host “First Fridays” which is an informal opportunity to drop in for a casual conversation with your elected officials to ask questions/get updates on things going on around town. To participate in this month’s First Friday on July 2, stop by the Community Center between 7:45am-9:15am.
Did you know that you can report non-emergency issues or concerns with the Superior Click and Fix app? The app is available for IOS and Android devices. Download the mobile app from Google Play or the Apple App Store by searching for “Superior Click and Fix.”
On May 24, 2021, the Town Board approved an amendment to our remote meeting policy. And although we have resumed meetings in-person at Town Hall, members of the public may still participate either in-person or virtually via Zoom. Thanks to new equipment installed at Town Hall, we’re making it easier for the public to participate in their local government.
Boulder County Public Health is no longer reporting total COVID-19 cases for Superior. Instead, they are giving us regional data. You can see the positive case trend in the regional chart (Superior, Louisville, and Lafayette) by visiting this link: https://www.bouldercounty.org/families/disease/covid-19/covid-19-illness-data/
In addition, Boulder County’s mask order expired on June 10, 2021. According to State requirements, Public Health Order 20-38 requires unvaccinated people to wear masks in specific settings, including schools, child care centers, medical facilities, prisons, and jails. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) encourages people who are not fully vaccinated to wear masks in all other public indoor spaces to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
In addition, vaccines are available to anyone above age 12. For information from the State on vaccine distribution, please see: https://covid19.colorado.gov/for-coloradans/vaccine/vaccine-for-coloradans. For more information on obtaining a COVID vaccine, please visit: www.boco.org/COVIDVaccines.
