Hi neighbors – I hope everyone is having a great summer. Here’s my mid-month update for July 2019 for things going on in Superior. Please feel free to leave a comment below if you have any questions or comments.
This month, the developer of Downtown Superior will be installing Monument Signs at the intersection of McCaslin and Marshall, as well as at the roundabout at McCaslin & Main Street. I’ve included images of what the signs will look like.
Where are the wildflowers? Wildflower Park is now three years old. The first year was amazing and was filled with beautiful wildflowers. In its second year, Goldenrod took over and turned the entire area into a sea of golden-yellow. Apparently, Tall Goldenrod is a heartier wildflower and won the battle of establishing itself amongst all the other wildflowers that were originally planted. To combat the Goldenrod takeover, the Town mowed the Goldenrod before it seeded to help the other wildflowers re-establish. Unfortunately, this had the effect of allowing grass to takeover.
Town Staff has consulted with botanists at CSU who have advised that we should let the flowers grow and not mow them, and that it will likely take a couple growing seasons to return to the look we had in the first year. Separately, we’re looking at some additional perennial plantings that might work with the feel of Wildflower Park. Thanks for your patience.
Attention fans of American Ninja Warrior, the Town of Superior and the “Wolfpack Ninjas” have been working together to possibly plan an event in Community Park next year. Dates and times are still TBD, but the event will likely be a two-day event in 2020, where our kids (and adults!) will be able to run an official ninja course like they see on TV and get the opportunity to meet with celebrity ninjas! This is going to be an awesome event and I’m excited that the Town Board, Town Staff, and advisory committees such as SYLC (Superior Youth Leadership Council) have enthusiastically supported this suggested event. Stay tuned.
As you drive South on McCaslin from the roundabout at Main Street, if you look to the left, you’ll see the start of the residential development occurring on the hill south of Discovery Office Park. The landowner is developing 20 residential lots and images of the development are included. Building permits have been issued, infrastructure is complete, and you can see the foundations have already started going up.
I wrote a couple months ago about the on-going issues Superior residents have had with Verizon, AT&T, and other mobile carriers. In response to these complaints, Verizon and the Town entered into an agreement related to the deployment of “small cell” technology in Town. However, in addition to small cells, Verizon representatives have met with staff and Town Board representatives to discuss the possibility of installing a macro facility in Community Park. This would likely involve the replacement of one of the existing large light poles in the park along with the addition of a small building for equipment. I appreciate that Verizon is being responsive to our community and proposing solutions to deal with cell-phone coverage problems that exist here in Superior.
We currently have the following openings on our advisory committees:
Serving on our advisory committees is a great way to learn more about our Town, while giving back to the community. If you have questions, or are interested in serving, please contact Karen Snortland, Committee Coordinator at karens@superiorcolorado.gov and she will guide you through the application process.
The Lowdown with Trustee Lacis:
Do you have questions about our Town? Would you like to discuss Town issues one-on-one? I’m starting a new monthly program called “The Lowdown with Trustee Lacis.” This is an opportunity for any of our residents to meet with me to talk about anything related to the Town of Superior. My previous post has more details. A couple residents have already signed up and I’m looking forward to meeting with you. Please email me direct at markl@superiorcolorado.gov if you’re interested.
